OFSTED stopped trying to turn childminders into nurseries by making them follow all the same paperwork/planning/evidence taking etc etc ...
As a parent I chose a childminder for the care of my babies/children because they were in a home from home caring environment with one person I like and trust who has an excellent reputation. I do not want a institusionalised environment for them. I do not expect a detailed planned documented evidence catalogued day. I trust my childminder's professionalism to provide a stimulating environment and know my children would let me know if they were not happy. In addition to working from 8am till 6pm with young children, the amount of planning and paperwork that my childminder has to do means that now she has to give up her family time which undoubtedly will lead to a loss of enthusiasm in the job she loves (she works hard enough!) or put the children in front of the TV so she can do the paperwork during the day which she hates doing. She is not a school with the resources to bring in extra staff to give her planning time - she works longer hours than me (a primary school teacher), works through school holidays and is endlessly patient and enthusiastic - I don't want her (like many other childminders have) to feel she needs to stop doing the job she has done for 14 years and does so excellently.
Why does the government feel the need to meddle so much with the minutae of people's lives?
Inspections should be stringent but focus on the important things not a tick list of evidence collected which shows nothing - the inspectors never speak to the parents when they inspect; we could provide much more of an insight.
